Another trio of titles for St Anne’s at the national championships

It was the renowned St Anne’s club that stood head and shoulders above other clubs at the national championships for male boxers age 11, 12, and 13 years last weekend in the National Stadium. Three additional titles for the club in addition to the previous three secured two weeks ago in the Boy 4/Youth 1 division showed the strength of the club throughout all age groups.

Hat-trick of national titles for St Anne’s

Nine Mayo boys won titles in the 2013 National championships in the Boy 3, Youth 1 and Youth 2 grades in the National Stadium last weekend. Westport’s St Anne’s club were one of the most successful clubs involved in the entire championships, winning all three of the final’s their boxers were involved in. James Brennan followed in the footsteps of his father winning the Youth 1, 44kg title 26 years after his dad Martin won the Junior 75kg title. Brennan defeated Ned O’Reilly Tramore BC on a score of 14-10 in the final.

Moylette and Lynch go for glory in Elite finals

There will be plenty of Mayo interest in the action in the National Stadium in Dublin where the IABA Elite National Championships finals will be taking place tonight. St Anne’s Ray Moylette will be up in the fourth bout of the night when he takes on Ross Hickey in what is potentially the bout of the night in the light-welterweight (64kg) grade. Moylette is the defending European champion and ranked number eight in the world, while Hickey is a two time elite champion and is defending his title from last year. Moylette, who had plenty of injury problems last year which curtailed his chances of making it to the Olympics, is back in top form this year and over the past two weekends saw off Patrick Mongan 14-7 in his quarter-final victory and Sean Duffy 18-10 in his semi-final win last Friday night.

Moylette gets World Championship under way today

Islandeady’s Ray Moylette will get his World Championships underway in Baku, Azerbaijan, today when he takes on Latvian Aturs Ahmetovs in the last 64 of the competition. Three wins for the St Anne’s club man who claimed the European Light Welterweight title during the summer will book his place in next year’s Olympics in London. Having won the European title Moylette has been ranked fourth by the AIBA in the World Championship, but his place in this week’s competition was only secured a few weeks ago when be defeated Irish champion Ross Hickey in a box off in the National Stadium.

Box-off for Moylette to book place in World Championships

Ray Moylette will face off against Ross Hickey in the National Stadium in Dublin this day week, September 2 for a place in the Irish squad for World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Moylette, who claimed the European Championship at the light welterweight (65kg) grade, will be looking to defeat Hickey who is currently the Irish senior champion at the same weight. The national organising body decided to have a box-off between the two boxers for a seat on the plane to Azerbaijan because Moylette was injured prior to Irish qualifiers for the tournament, while Hickey was unable to travel to the European Championships, which was won by Moylette.
